The 2-second rule: how site speed kills breeder sales

Welcome back to Found. Issue four.

A family in Ohio clicks the ad you were running to your About page. Your phone pings with a notification: new visitor.

Your About page takes 5.3 seconds to load.

They're gone at 2.8 seconds. You paid for that click. Meta kept the money. The family bought from a breeder two states over who had a faster site.

This is the 2-second rule, and it decides more breeder sales than you would believe.

Why two seconds

Google published the research years ago. At 1 second, most visitors stay. At 3 seconds, 32% of them bounce. At 5 seconds, more than half are gone. At 10 seconds, it's over 90%.

Now the uncomfortable part. The 2-second rule applies to mobile. Which is where your buyers are. Roughly 78% of breeder site traffic in 2026 is phones. Not desktops. Phones on wifi, phones on cellular, phones at 10pm on a couch.

If your site takes 5 seconds to load on a laptop, it takes 11 seconds on a phone on cellular. That's eleven seconds of a blank screen with your kennel name at the top and a tiny loading spinner. Eleven seconds of the buyer looking at something else. Eleven seconds during which they tap back and open the next search result.

Where the time goes

On a typical breeder website, the load time goes to three places:

  • **Fonts.** Most sites load six fonts when they need two. Every extra font is a round trip to a font server and a render block until it arrives.
  • **Images.** A hero photo at 4000 x 3000 pixels weighs 5MB. The buyer's phone downloads all 5MB to show a photo that's 800 pixels wide on their screen. 4000 pixels of it is wasted.
  • **Plugins and builders.** Elementor, Divi, every popular drag-and-drop page builder. They generate JavaScript-heavy output that has to download, parse, and run before anything appears. Fifteen plugins means fifteen scripts. Each one is a delay.

How to test

Two free tools. Both take 90 seconds:

  1. PageSpeed Insights at pagespeed.web.dev. Type your URL, click run. Look at the mobile score (not desktop). Under 50 is a crisis. 50 to 75 is most breeder sites. 90+ is what you want.
  1. Your own phone. Open your site on cellular data, not wifi. Count out loud: one Mississippi, two Mississippi. If the page isn't fully visible by "three Mississippi," you're bleeding visitors.

Three fixes

In order of impact on most breeder sites:

  • Compress every image before uploading. Free tool: squoosh.app. A 5MB photo shrinks to 200KB with no visible quality loss. Do this once for every hero image on your site.
  • Cut your fonts. Pick two. Body and headline. Nothing else. Every extra font is borrowed time.
  • Audit your plugins if you're on WordPress. Deactivate half of them. The site rarely breaks. If speed jumps, you just found the culprits.

What the platform does for you

The platform I'm building starts at a mobile PageSpeed score of 95+. Fonts pre-optimized. Images resized on the fly. No plugin bloat. You don't manage any of it. You just write your kennel story and upload photos from your phone.

What to do this week

Pick one:

  1. Run PageSpeed Insights on your homepage AND your About page AND your Available Puppies page. Write down the mobile scores. If any are under 50, that page is losing you buyers right now.
  1. Open your site on your phone on cellular data. Count to three. See where you are.
  1. Grab a free visibility audit. Site speed is the first thing we score.
