Long-tail keywords, the breeder cheat code

Welcome back to Found. Issue thirteen.

Here's a fact that changes how most breeders think about SEO.

Nobody Googles "Pomeranian breeder." Well, some people do. But the ones who do are usually curious, not buying. The ones who are actually ready to buy Google something much more specific.

They Google "wolf sable Pomeranian breeder in Wisconsin." Or "teacup Pomeranian vs throwback Pomeranian." Or "Pomeranian breeder near Madison WI under $4000." They have done their homework. They know exactly what they want.

These specific phrases are called long-tail keywords. They are your cheat code.

Why broad keywords are a trap

"Pomeranian breeder" has roughly 40,000 searches a month in the US. It sounds like a goldmine. It isn't. That term is fought over by the largest Pomeranian operations in the country, the big directory sites, AKC, breed clubs, and platforms like Good Dog. A single-kennel website has almost zero chance of ranking on page one for that phrase.

More importantly, the buyer behind that search is three months away from buying, if they ever will.

Why long-tail wins

"Wolf sable Pomeranian breeder in Wisconsin" might only have 40 searches a month. Sounds small. It's gold.

The buyer typing that phrase:

  • Knows the breed
  • Knows the specific color variation they want
  • Knows the state they're buying from
  • Is likely weeks away from placing a deposit

40 searches a month from that kind of buyer is worth 4000 from a casual browser.

And here's the real unlock: almost no one is competing for that phrase. You can rank first in a week.

How to find yours

Three free tools. 20 minutes.

Tool 1: Google autocomplete.

Start typing your breed into Google. Look at what Google suggests.

"Pomeranian breeder..." shows: Pomeranian breeder near me, Pomeranian breeder Wisconsin, Pomeranian breeder California, Pomeranian breeder with health testing, Pomeranian breeder that ships.

Every suggestion is a phrase real people typed recently. Write them down.

Tool 2: People Also Ask.

Do any Google search for your breed. Scroll to the "People also ask" box. Those are long-tail questions Google has seen people ask. Write them down.

Tool 3: Answer The Public.

Free tool at answerthepublic.com. Type in your breed. You get a huge list of questions real people ask sorted by who/what/when/where/why/how.

Between those three tools you'll have 40-80 long-tail keywords in 20 minutes.

The one-post-per-keyword rule

Each long-tail keyword becomes one blog post. The title matches the phrase or mirrors it closely.

Keyword: "when are Pomeranian puppies ready to go home" Post title: "When are Pomeranian puppies ready to go home?"

Keyword: "wolf sable Pomeranian breeder Wisconsin" Post title: "Wolf Sable Pomeranians: What to know before buying one in Wisconsin" (adds context, keeps the phrase)

Each post ranks for its own keyword. Each post targets a different buyer. Over six months you've got 25 posts each ranking for a different specific search. None of them compete with the huge sites for "Pomeranian breeder." All of them collect buyers who are actually ready.

The geo-color-breed formula

If you want a shortcut for breed-specific breeders, this formula almost always surfaces untapped keywords:

[breed] + [color or coat variation] + [state or city]

Example: "Wolf sable Pomeranian breeder Wisconsin" or "Dapple Dachshund breeder Madison."

Run your breed through this formula for your state, your closest major city, and the five closest cities to you. Each combination is a post.

What the platform does for you

The platform I'm building includes a breed-specific keyword research step in onboarding. It pre-populates your blog post calendar with long-tail keywords your breed actually ranks for. You just write (or have us write) the posts.
